Description

The sitter (1812-1844) was born on the island of Saint Thomas, at that time a colony in the Danish West Indies. He was sent to Copenhagen to study medicine and later set up practice at Satrup in Schleswig, then part of Denmark. For health reasons, he returned with his wife to the Virgin Islands, where they both died in 1844.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts Dr. Johann Henning Kjetil Hjardemaal, a young man with light skin tone, seated against a dark maroon background. Facing our left, he wears a dark coat over a stiff white cravat. His right hand holds a long, thin black object, while his left rests on an open book atop a dark green table. Light from our left defines his features and a small wooden specimen box.
