Did You Know?

The street seen here was located near the Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris's first commercial train station.

Description

Pissarro first worked in lithography in 1874 but, after a dozen attempts, abandoned the medium until 1894. Then, within the space of a few years, he executed about 50 examples. These lithographs record a variety of subjects, including scenes of Rouen and Paris. The artist's bold, quickly drawn lines capture the energy and bustle of these cities.
A vertically oriented print in black ink looks around a corner onto a street with squat rectangular buildings flanking a road bustling with people and wagons suggested by layered, frenetic strokes. Vertical strokes create rows of rectangular windows in the buildings. The building at the corner on the left side is shaded with diagonal strokes. "C.P" signs the lower right corner.
