Description

Now comprising three scrolls, this composition was originally a set of four paintings depicting the seasons. The set is among the most important of the artist’s surviving works. Each painting was executed in the gyō mode, indicating a speedy brush with rounded strokes. The terms shin (formal), sō (cursive), and gyō (semicursive), borrowed from calligraphy terminology, are terms commonly used by connoisseurs to describe brushwork in ink paintings.
A vertical hanging scroll depicts a misty landscape in monochromatic ink. At the bottom, several small boats navigate a pale river. Dense brushstrokes create thickets of dark trees surrounding a cluster of houses. A rounded hill featuring a winding path rises through the middle ground toward faint mountains shrouded in hazy background mist. The painting is mounted on mustard-yellow patterned silk, marked with a small red seal in the lower left.
