Description

Little is known about this gifted photographer who produced photographic studies of the landscape and rural motifs during the 1860s and 1870s. This image depicts a lovely wooded landscape scene flooded with sparkling sunlight and rich shadows. Of all the landscape photographers active in the 1870s, Famin produced the closest equivalent of impressionism in his work.
A horizontally oriented albumen print in monochromatic brown tones depicts a dense forest. In the foreground, thick tree trunks with mottled bark rise from a dark, textured floor. To the left, a prominent trunk leans toward the center, while another stands straight on the right. Thinner trees and layered foliage fill the middle ground. Bright light filters through the canopy, casting highlights on pale trunks and illuminating patches of the ground.
