Description

A wolf howls beneath the tall pines in a misty landscape. The painter was born in the bustling city of Osaka in the Kansai region. He studied with Mori Jihō (1818–1891) and admired the Maruyama school of painters. He was especially gifted at depicting deer, monkeys, tigers, weasels, and other animals.
A vertically oriented ink and color hanging scroll on silk depicts a slender wolf traversing a misty forest. Lower center, the wolf walks left with head tilted and mouth agape. Massive vertical tree trunks with textured bark occupy the right, beneath branches of dark, needle-like leaves. To the left, the scene dissolves into an ethereal, pale gray mist. Calligraphic characters and a red seal punctuate the bottom right corner.
