Description

Kamisaka Sekka made preparatory drawings for his Flowers of a Hundred Worlds series on tracing paper with ink and color. The freehand sketches are much looser than the finished, printed compositions.
A horizontally oriented ink and color drawing on paper depicts a green, muscular demon with yellow horns and long gray hair flowing to our right. Facing us with bared teeth, the figure wears a patterned loincloth and blue shoulder drapes, grasping yellow mallets in each hand. To our left, two reddish-brown circular drums with colorful swirl patterns float against a plain background. Bold black outlines define the figure's form.
