Description

Kamisaka Sekka made preparatory drawings for his Flowers of a Hundred Worlds series on tracing paper with ink and color. The freehand sketches are much looser than the finished, printed compositions.
Ink and color on horizontally oriented tan paper features a broad, dark gray diagonal sweep across the lower half. To the right, clusters of large white and pink peonies with dark brown leaves anchor the composition. Small yellow star-shaped flowers with green leaves bloom above, while red fringed blossoms rest below. Two white trumpet lilies with yellow centers extend from the cluster over the gray form, rendered in loose, expressive ink strokes.
