Description

Kamisaka Sekka made preparatory drawings for his Flowers of a Hundred Worlds series on tracing paper with ink and color. The freehand sketches are much looser than the finished, printed compositions.
A horizontally oriented ink and color drawing with bold, saturated washes depicts several thick, textured brown tree trunks leaning sharply left against a cream background. Mottled green and gray spots texture the trunks, while a dense, vibrant green canopy spans the top. Small patches of deep blue peek through the upper foliage. Thin, dark, hook-like branches curve from the trunks, emphasizing the rhythmic, gestural movement of the forest scene.
