Description

Kamisaka Sekka made preparatory drawings for his Flowers of a Hundred Worlds series on tracing paper with ink and color. The freehand sketches are much looser than the finished, printed compositions.
A horizontal ink and color drawing on paper features a rooster behind a bamboo fence. Vertical green stalks and a zigzagging yellow top rail partially obscure the bird, which has white plumage, a vibrant red comb and wattle on our left, and bold black tail feathers on our right. Fluid brushwork and ink washes define the forms against a flat, warm yellow background, with foreground stalks creating a sense of layered depth.
