Description

According to a poem describing this ragini (melody), a lovesick girl plays with a cat to pass the time. Her companion tries to console her. Musical performances of Patamanjari Ragini are based on the sound of a cat’s voice. They evoke the heroine’s feelings of longing to reunite with her lover. This painting was part of an extensive set, each depicting a specific mood and a visual element related to the sound of different melodies.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting depicts two women with medium skin tones outside a white building. At left, a standing woman in a black and gold dress points toward a spotted leopard on the grass. Her companion, in a blue sari and seated on a red cushion, extends a hand toward the animal. Behind them, the building features a dome and tower beside a thin tree. Script marks the red upper border.
