Hanshan, a Tang poet of vernacular verses, is often associated with Chan Buddhism and is considered a deity in disguise.
A vertically oriented ink and color on silk painting portrays the figure Hanshan leaning forward in a somber landscape. Clad in layered, off-white robes with blue and green trim, they clutch a blue scroll with both hands. A gnarled tree trunk anchors the left, while dark willow branches cascade from the upper edge against a muted brown background. Sparse grass grounds the figure, creating a contemplative atmosphere through delicate, expressive brushwork.
