Did You Know?

The drummers and horn blowers proclaim to the population that the king shot a tiger.

Description

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the cliffs that define the landscape of the small princely kingdom of Kota, a majestic tiger has just been shot by the king. Noisemakers with a firebrand drive the tiger out of the forest, and men at the right keep bears at bay. The women and musicians in two small boats look on in admiration.
A horizontally oriented gum tempera and ink painting depicts Ram Singh II, a man with a medium-light skin tone, aiming a rifle from a red boat. Men in green robes play horns and fire weapons from purple-gray cliffs and neighboring vessels. Centrally, a large orange and black-striped tiger leaps across rocky terrain toward two black bears. In the blue water below, fish and a turtle swim past the hunting party.
