Description

The notion of the pastoral ideal is made explicit in the work of Jacque. In 1849, along with Jean-François Millet, Jacque moved to the village of Barbizon, which by then was an established artist’s colony. There he painted, drew, and etched rustic landscapes in which man and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
A horizontally oriented black chalk drawing on beige paper, heightened with white, depicts a shepherd and his flock. To our right, a man in a wide-brimmed hat walks left, staff in hand, following a cluster of sheep and a low-running dog. Dark, sketchy strokes form tall trees on the left against a clouded sky with white highlights. A cursive signature is visible in the bottom-left corner.
