Did You Know?

A bottle with a wide opening is one of the popular types for both bronze and celadon wares. Its ceramic counterpart is 1918.435.

Description

As early as the seventh century, the practice of drinking tea and wine became an important part of elite culture in Korea. Elites of the Goryeo period commissioned a variety of types of utensils and vessels made in both ceramic and bronze, including this handsome bronze wine bottle to make their drinking experience more exciting.
A bronze vessel takes a bulbous form with its wide body tapering into a short neck and flared, flat-topped rim. Standing on a flared pedestal base, the vessel is heavily encrusted with a textured, muted green and turquoise patina. Irregular patches of tan and brown oxidation interlace the weathered exterior, creating a rough, uneven skin. Light occasionally catches on its encrusted ridges, accentuating the vessel's rounded form.
