Description

Rievaulx Abbey belongs to Cotman’s first series of etchings, published in 1811. The thirteen images depict the landscape of Yorkshire and picturesque architectural views such as rural cottages, ancient stone walls, and overgrown, ruined abbeys. The crumbling Gothic church was a quintessentially Romantic theme, intended to allude to a lost past.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts ruined stone arches. Dense leaf clusters gather atop the crumbling masonry. To our left, a wooden cart rests on a slope near a cow. On our right, another cow stands beside a makeshift shelter. Light from our right casts shadows across the arches and grassy foreground. Fine, hatched lines, most vertical or at slight diagonals, create the scene.
