Description

Since Roche was primarily a sculptor and ceramist, he sought a more three-dimensional printmaking technique and experimented with the gypsograph, which is printed in relief. The figure of Prometheus (a Greek mythological figure punished by Zeus) appears to have been carved from the rocky outcropping behind it. At the same time, Roche created the effect of transparent water and reflection in the lower portion of the composition.
A grainy horizontal grayscale print depicts a nude figure with light skin tone reclining against a craggy rock. Facing left, his head is tilted down and legs extend toward a white spray of water. His right arm braces against the rock behind him. Dark, grainy shading creates contrast throughout the monochromatic scene. Jagged forms and foliage appear on our right, above a horizontal ground line.
