Description

Elijah is perhaps best known for escaping death by ascending into heaven on a chariot of fire, an episode seen by many Christians as a foreshadowing of the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ.
A vertically oriented engraving depicts Elisha, an older man with a light skin tone, kneeling on rocky ground and reaching toward the sky. A gnarled tree trunk dominates the right foreground, while smaller trees rise on the left. In the upper center, Elijah ascends in a horse-drawn chariot amidst clouds. Distant mountains sit beneath a light sky, with fine, intersecting lines creating deep shadows and intricate textures throughout the landscape.
