Description

L’Estaque, a suburb of Marseilles in Provence, attracted numerous artists who admired its hilly terrain, including Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque.
A horizontally oriented etching features a rugged landscape beneath a pale sky filled with fine horizontal lines. In the dark foreground, a cluster of arched grasses grows between sloping hills. To the right, a craggy, pale cliff face rises with deep vertical shadows. A dense plume of white smoke billows from behind slanted rooftops in the center, framing a tall, slender tree. A tiny building sits on a distant hill to the right.
