Description

This landscape illustrates the sublime beauty of nature, a Romantic concept, but it also reflects the importance of classical training in Rome. Throughout the 19th century, artists flocked to Italy to study classical ruins and themes, as well as landscapes. Here, the castle evokes Northern Italian fortresses, and in the tradition of other French artists traveling to Rome, Michallon imbued his rendering of the Alps with great emotion.
A horizontally oriented brown ink and wash drawing depicts a towered castle perched atop a hill. In the lower left, two figures with light skin tones sit near a river with grazing sheep. Thick trees frame the left side, while white highlights suggest light radiating from behind the castle. Muted tones and delicate lines define distant mountains beneath a sky with a crescent moon, creating depth across the landscape.
