Description

Legend has it that Chinese beauty Ling Zhaonu, whose name is pronounced Rei Shōjo in Japanese, was a model of devotion to her parents. She put great effort into selling baskets made by her elderly father, a devout Buddhist, thereby keeping the family afloat financially. The verse on the painting relates her story, and was inscribed by a Zen monk.
A vertically oriented ink and light color hanging scroll depicts Ling Zhaonu, a woman with light skin tone. Facing toward our right, her dark hair is styled in a high, looped bun. She wears a loose robe with patterned borders, her hands meeting at her waist to hold several small, round discs. A woven basket sits at her feet on our right. Vertical Chinese calligraphy and a red seal appear in the upper left.
