Description

Rebell’s early work, such as this Italian view, had strong overtones of classicism and was influenced by Claude Lorrain’s heroic depictions of the landscape. Rebell spent long periods in Italy, first visiting Milan in 1810, Naples in 1813, and Rome in 1816. More active as a painter, he made a small number of prints. This evocative etching printed on brown paper and enlivened with white heightening reveals his painterly inclinations.
A horizontally oriented etching in black ink depicts a landscape framed by towering, leafy trees. To the left, two small, robed figures stand near a body of water, while another sits in the foreground shadows on the right. In the middle ground, dense foliage surrounds a ruined cylindrical tower and a colonnaded building. Distant mountains rise beneath a light sky, all rendered with meticulous, fine hatching.
