Description

Doughty belonged to the generation of American landscape painters who preceded the Hudson River school. Early compositions such as Landscape with Winding Road display his mastery of atmospheric effects and his familiarity with the contemporary popular aesthetic of the picturesque. Doughty became best known for his romantic interpretations of sublime American scenery—poetic evocations rather than literal portraits of specific locales.
A horizontally oriented drawing in brown wash depicts a landscape with a winding path. From the lower right, a pale road curves toward the middle ground. On the left, two spindly trees rise from dense, splotchy bushes. Lighter trees fade into the hazy background on the right. The inscription "DOUGHTY 1833" is written across the path. Fine ink lines frame the scene on tan paper.
