Description

Like other prominent photographers of the 1800s, Ryder, a Clevelander, undertook commissioned works from the expanding railroad industry to document the safety and convenience of railway travel, as well as to endorse resettlement on company-owned land and reassure investors. The serpentine track in this charming image winds its way through a dense forest, leading the viewer’s imagination to unexpected adventures.
A horizontally oriented albumen print with an arched top features a landscape of railway tracks curving through a rugged woodland. In the foreground, tracks enter from the bottom center, winding left toward the distance. A steep, dark earthen bank rises on the right, while the left hillside is strewn with felled logs and stumps. Tall, spindly trees fill the background. Centered text at the bottom reads, "Atlantic & Great Western Railway."
