Did You Know?

The extension of railroad service from Paris across Brittany in northern France occurred in stages between 1840 and 1865.

Description

Extending railway service required the construction of railway bridges such as this masonry viaduct which crosses the Doufine River near Pont-de-Buis. Jules DuClos shows it under construction, with timbers supporting the arches and a man standing in the river below.
A vertically oriented albumen print photograph depicts a tall stone bridge with massive arches spanning a river. Interlocking wooden beams fill the space beneath each arch. In the lower foreground, reflections shimmer in the water as a man stands near the right bank. Stone buildings and rolling hills appear in the distance between the piers. At the top right, a wooden gantry sits on the bridge's high deck.
