Did You Know?

This photograph illustrates the developing close association in the late 1800s between photographers and artists.

Description

Guglielmo Marconi specialized in nude studies for use by painters and sculptors. Using children, women, and men as models, he photographed a variety of poses traditionally employed by models in academic studios. Artists purchased them because working from a photograph was much cheaper than hiring a live model.
A vertically oriented sepia-toned albumen print depicts a nude man with light skin tone and muscular build standing on a wooden block. Back to us, his body angles toward our right as his head turns toward our left. He holds a long, thin rod over his shoulder with both hands, his right arm raised and extended. Short, curly hair contrasts against a dark background, and the number "45." is inscribed below.
