Description

This byōbu composition differs from most in that it comprises two four-panel screens, rather than two six-panel units. Since the current mounting is modern, it is impossible to determine whether its present configuration represents its original design. Some panels may have been removed to help the screens better fit into a modern interior space. Baiitsu worked almost exclusively in monochromatic ink tones and favored classical Chinese painting themes.
Two four-panel folding screens feature ink and gold foil paintings. On the upper screen, a goose flies rightward while two others rest among tall reeds. On the lower screen, a flock flies from the right over wavy water. Both screens feature muted gold clouds drifting across a warm tan background. Detailed gray and black ink brushstrokes define the birds and plants, which extend across the expansive horizontal surface of each composition.
