Description

This byōbu composition differs from most in that it comprises two four-panel screens, rather than two six-panel units. Since the current mounting is modern, it is impossible to determine whether its present configuration represents its original design. Some panels may have been removed to help the screens better fit into a modern interior space. Baiitsu worked almost exclusively in monochromatic ink tones and favored classical Chinese painting themes.
A horizontal four-panel folding screen features geese and tall grasses in ink and gold foil against a tan background. On the far left, a single goose flies with outstretched wings. In the lower center, two geese stand amidst thin reeds, one with its beak open toward the sky. Horizontal bands of mottled gold foil form clouds throughout. Calligraphy and red seals mark the lower right corner.
