Description

This scene illustrates the famous theme of Eight Views of the Xiao-Xiang River. This subject is also depicted in other paintings in our collection. This particular scene is known as "Returning Sail off Distant Shore."
A horizontally oriented ink and color painting depicts a misty landscape with a steep cliff and building rising on the left. Two figures walk a path below, while leaning pine trees grow from a shoreline extending to the right. Four small boats float in the hazy background beyond a seated figure. The scene is rendered in muted brown and gray tones with dark ink accents and a red seal in the lower left.
