Description

In addition to his activities as a portrait and history painter, Plattemontagne was one of the greatest printmakers in France during the 17th century. The Body of Christ in the Sepulchre is one of the artist's masterpieces. Here the combination of etching and engraving is particularly effective in creating dramatic effects of light, shade, and texture.
A horizontally oriented etching and engraving depicts Christ, a man with light skin tone, lying in a dark sepulcher. His eyes are closed, head resting on a folded cloth. Wounds mark his side, hand, and feet. Below him, a stone ledge features Latin text and a scroll with a coat of arms. A woven crown of thorns sits at the bottom left. Fine lines define the dramatic shadows and his prominent musculature.
