Description

Unlike most cliché-verres, which are similar to line drawings, Dutilleux's thirteen works in this medium are extremely tonal. The artist described them as "monochrome paintings on glass for photography." Instead of scratching the design into the opaque ground covering the glass plate, as Corot or Daubigny had done, Dutilleux created the image by painting the plate with it.
A horizontal cliché-verre print depicts a landscape in dark brown and off-white. A massive, textured cluster of trees dominates the left and center, its foliage reaching the top edge. To the right, two figures navigate a boat through marshy water. In the foreground, grass and water are rendered in thick, broken strokes. Low hills sit beneath a wide sky filled with swirling, scribbled marks and bright patches of light.
