A vertically oriented ink and color painting on paper depicts the monk Sōsei with a shaved head and light skin. Seated cross-legged and facing right, he wears voluminous white robes accented by a black patterned sash. Above his downward gaze, fluid Japanese calligraphy in black ink flows across the muted brown background in vertical columns. A small red seal marks the lower left corner of the portrait.
