This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings.

Description

This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings. Each hanging scroll bears four different characters: tiger, dragon, whistle, and recite. Traditionally, tiger and dragon belong to the four directional guards, respectively west and east.
A vertical hanging scroll features decorative panels enclosed within an ornate gold and red floral border. At the top, a bold, fluid black ink character is centered in a red and blue circular medallion. Below, a golden dragon clutching a green orb floats inside a scalloped red frame, surrounded by sprays of white plum blossoms and pink peonies. The bottom depicts a blue creature with a green mane frolicking among swirling red ribbons and pearls.
