This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings.

Description

This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings. Each hanging scroll bears four different character; tiger, dragon, whistle, and recite. Traditionally, tiger and dragon belong to the four directional guards, respectively west and east.
A vertically long paper scroll features vibrant red, blue, and green ink patterns. A bold black character sits inside a red and blue circular medallion below a yellow lotus. Lower, a golden dragon is centered within a red four-lobed frame, densely patterned with clouds. Two phoenixes and a blue, green-maned beast occupy the bottom panels. Ornate red and gold scrolling floral patterns form a wide border against the tan paper.
