Description

This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings. Each hanging scroll bears four different character; tiger, dragon, whistle, and recite. Traditionally, tiger and dragon belong to the four directional guards, respectively west and east.
A vertical hanging scroll depicts decorative sections in ink and color on paper, framed by a red and gold floral border. At the top, a large black calligraphic character rests within a circular frame among vibrant clouds. Below, a lobed red border contains a dragon rising over waves, flanked by floral sprays. At the base, two spotted green and blue beasts play with a ball amidst flowing red ribbons.
