Description

This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings. Each hanging scroll bears four different character; tiger, dragon, whistle, and recite. Traditionally, tiger and dragon belong to the four directional guards, respectively west and east.
A vertically long ink and color scroll painting on paper features decorative registers enclosed by a red and gold floral border. Near the top, a large black calligraphic character sits inside a circular frame surrounded by rainbow clouds. Below, a central scalloped medallion contains a golden dragon rising from waves, flanked by flowering sprigs. The base panel depicts two green and blue lions playing with a brocade ball amidst swirling red ribbons and auspicious symbols.
