Description

By 1862 and the founding of the Société des aquafortistes (Etcher's Society), there was a revival of interest amongst French painters in etching.
A horizontally oriented etching and aquatint depicts a bustling, snowy Paris street scene surrounded by various marginal sketches. In the central scene, figures walk through deep snow past a tall advertising kiosk and horse-drawn carriages. Dogs gather in the foreground while men shovel. Vignettes on the left show a fallen horse and figures huddled by a fire. Text reading L'HIVER DE 1879 A PARIS appears at the bottom right.
