Description

Threatened by the use of photomechanical methods to reproduce images in journals, printmakers formed various professional groups to demonstrate the artistic superiority of woodcut and wood engraving for the purpose of illustration. The Society of Wood Engravers (Société Corporative des Graveurs sur Bois) published a monthly art and literary review called L'Image (1896-97), in which Au Luxembourg appeared.
A vertically oriented print in heavy black ink and white lines depicts a crowd in a park. Centrally, a person in a checked cloak stands with their back turned. To the left, a figure with a light skin tone wears a ruffled collar. In the foreground, people in wide-brimmed hats stand near a child with a hoop. Dense, stylized foliage fills the background. Text appears in the white margins.
