Did You Know?

This painting is a fragment of a much larger banner painting.

Description

This painting is a fragment of a much larger banner painting, now preserved by mounting on a four-panel continuous folding screen. On the back are Buddhist sutra pages, with text written in gold ink on indigo dyed paper.
A vertically oriented ink and color on silk painting depicts numerous clustered Buddhist figures with light skin tones across a four-panel screen. Some figures wear crowns while others have shaved heads. In the foreground, a person in a green patterned robe stands near a youth with a green collar. Lush green cloud motifs weave between figures against a dark gold background. Decorative red bands with gold patterns border the top and bottom.
