Description

The artist Bian Shoumin is known for his depiction of wild geese, water, and reeds. The migrant birds in autumn and winter evoked, in the minds of the Chinese intelligentsia, a time of parting and sorrow.
A horizontally oriented ink and color painting on paper depicts four birds within a misty landscape of tall, tan reeds. In the upper left, a single bird flies right with outstretched wings. Below, three birds sit among the grasses; one perches on a bent stalk while another gazes upward. Muted gray and brown horizontal washes suggest a hazy background. Vertical black calligraphy and two red seals are placed on the far left.
