Description

The artist Bian Shoumin is known for his depiction of wild geese, water, and reeds. The migrant birds in autumn and winter evoked, in the minds of the Chinese intelligentsia, a time of parting and sorrow.
An album leaf in ink and muted colors on paper depicts two gray birds flying left across a pale expanse. In the lower left, thin, brown reeds with pointed leaves lean rightward. The birds in the upper right feature black heads, gray bodies, and small red feet. Seven vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy and red seals occupy the upper left (see "Inscriptions"). A third red seal sits in the bottom right corner.
