Description

The artist Bian Shoumin is known for his depiction of wild geese, water, and reeds. The migrant birds in autumn and winter evoked, in the minds of the Chinese intelligentsia, a time of parting and sorrow.
An ink and color painting on a horizontal album leaf depicts four geese among tall reeds leaning right. On the left stands a lone goose gazing upward. In the lower center, two geese float together while another descends from the upper right. Muted grays and blacks define the composition, accented by orange feet. In the upper left corner, calligraphy and red seals appear, with a final seal at the bottom right.
