Description

The artist Bian Shoumin is known for his depiction of wild geese, water, and reeds. The migrant birds in autumn and winter evoked, in the minds of the Chinese intelligentsia, a time of parting and sorrow.
A horizontally oriented ink painting depicts waterfowl among brown and gray reeds on a cream surface. In the upper left, thin reeds bend toward the center. Three geese with gray and brown bodies and black heads with white patches float in the middle; the rightmost has wings partially extended. A smaller dark bird appears between them. Vertical columns of black calligraphy and red seals occupy the right edge, with another seal in the lower left.
