Description

The artist Bian Shoumin is known for his depiction of wild geese, water, and reeds. The migrant birds in autumn and winter evoked, in the minds of the Chinese intelligentsia, a time of parting and sorrow.
An album leaf in ink and color on paper depicts a wintry landscape. Reeds tipped with white sweep from the left, surrounding five dark-feathered geese. One goose looks up toward a lone white goose flying across the pale gray sky. Soft washes in muted tones of gray and tan create a hazy atmosphere across the horizontal scene. Vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy and two red seals occupy the upper left corner.
