Description

In this pair of figure paintings, the artist provided generational portraits of two clan leaders from the Hirai family, accompanied by lengthy inscriptions in a distinctive calligraphic style from separate scholar-officials.
Two vertically oriented hanging scrolls in ink and color on silk depict Hirai Kyosei and Hirai Rinsei seated cross-legged. Kyosei, on the left, has a shaved head and wears purple-brown wide-shouldered robes. On the right, Rinsei wears a blue patterned robe. Both men have light skin tones and face each other. Dense Japanese calligraphy and red seals fill the upper half of the scrolls, contrasting with the pale, aged silk.
