A handscroll in muted black ink on gold-brown silk depicts a wide landscape of craggy mountains shrouded in mist. Soft gray washes define receding peaks, while darker, defined strokes mark sparse trees and rocky ridges. Numerous blocks of black Japanese calligraphy in vertical columns intersperse with the landscape. The scroll's silk has aged, with dappled splotches along its edges.
