Description

Appian was one of the outstanding landscape painters of the 19th century in Lyon. He was also an excellent etcher who was extremely sensitive to light and atmosphere. He was able to create a mood with line and by carefully leaving a fine layer of ink on the surface of the copper plate which prints as pale tone.
A horizontally oriented etching in black ink on beige paper captures a coastal harbor. On the left, two masted boats with dark sails float near a rocky shoreline. To the right, a light wall with arched openings stretches toward a domed building. Densely etched lines create a wispy sky and reflective water. Tiny, silhouetted figures populate the boats, wall, and shore. The upper left corner is inscribed "APPIAN 1878."
