Did You Know?

German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer was one of the most popular composers of the mid- and late 1800s.

Description

Meyerbeer's operas were the most frequently performed works in Paris and throughout Europe. This portrait of the composer is signed “Nadar jeune” or “Nadar the younger.” Adrien Tournachon was the younger, less successful brother of the famed photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, known as Nadar.
An oval salt print depicts Giacomo Meyerbeer, a man with light skin tone, from the waist up. Angled toward our right, his gaze turns left with a somber expression. Curly dark hair fringes his temples. He wears a heavy dark coat contrasting with a high white collar and silken cravat. His hands are clasped in his lap, left elbow resting on a draped table. Soft light defines his features against a neutral background.
