Description

Radha, Krishna’s consort and foremost of the cowgirls (gopis), is depicted here with Krishna, seated on a divan. Popular stories of their romance evoke longing in separation, jealousy, and secret trysts. This image portrays their mutually passionate relationship.
A vertically oriented tempera painting depicts Krishna, a god with blue skin tone, and Radha, a woman with light skin tone, seated on a green platform. On our left, Krishna wears a yellow wrap and peacock headdress, raising his arm while reaching toward Radha. On our right, Radha wears a striped green sari and red skirt, holding a small object aloft. Both feature large, stylized eyes against a neutral background.
