Description

Prints were typically collected and kept in portfolios, but around 1891 some artists began to produce large color lithographs to be framed and hung indoors. Beginning in 1896, Henri Rivière designed 12 compositions titled Aspects of Nature, meant to be hung in vestibules, dining rooms, children’s bedrooms, or in schools to enliven classrooms and cultivate the students’ love for nature.
A horizontally oriented color lithograph depicts a winter forest with thick tree trunks extending vertically from cream-colored snow. The trunks feature olive and tan washes. To the right, two figures in long skirts and white head coverings walk away, carrying large bundles of brown sticks. Behind them, a screen of thin, pale trees fades into a light tan sky. Small red and black marks appear in the lower corners.
