Description

A Swiss etcher and draftsman primarily active in Germany, Adrian Zingg was esteemed as one of the most important landscapists of his generation. This Arcadian view—a technical marvel combining line etching with delicate washes of brown—is a superb example of the German Romantic landscape in which contemplative, idealized figures meditate and converse in a meticulously rendered wooded grove. It is thought that Zingg executed the etching and members of his workshop completed the hand coloring, following one of Zingg’s drawings.
A horizontally oriented etching with wash in muted brown tones depicts figures with light skin tones in a lush landscape. On our left, people stand before an inscribed stone monument, one pointing toward the text. Two more figures sit on the ground further left. In the center, a man and woman sit near a child and dog. Dense trees fill the background, while faint mountains rise in the distance on our right.
